Shenandoah National Park is one of those parks that is best experienced in a car you love to drive, because the park is full of neat little nooks and crannies, all spread along a ridgeline road that is appropriately named “Skyline Drive”. Of course I am thankful that I got to experience this in my Jeep Magnus.
We had two days to spend inside the park, so we laid out a couple of points of interest along the drive and planned our course of attack.
One of the things that I love about parks which prominently feature sweeping vistas is that the clouds become a part of the landscape, offering you a different experience with each day, and sometimes with each hour. On our first day in the park, we had just experienced some summer showers in the valley, offering us beautiful misty views once we climbed above the cloud layer.
Skyline Drive offers a plethora of beautiful views, nearly around every corner, and ample opportunity to get out and stretch your legs. I think that this park would be worthwhile even if you were unable to hike a single trail – it is such a mesmerizing drive.
We seized every opportunity to jump out of the Jeep and take photos as we crept along, and I was pleasantly surprised to find that there weren’t many other cars on the road with us – although this is probably *not* the case during “leaf peepin” season!
We even found a few opportunities to take photos with Magnus, some of my favorites! I think there is a law somewhere that says “tunnel + jeep = photo”.
